Models of memory formation posit that episodic memory formation depends critically on the hippocampus, which binds features of an event to its context. For this reason, the contrast between study items that are later recollected with their associative pair versus those for which no association is made fails should reveal electrophysiological patterns in the hippocampus selectively involved in associative memory encoding. Extensive data from studies in rodents support a model in which theta oscillations fulfill this role, but results in humans have not been as clear. Here, we used an associative recognition memory procedure to identify hippocampal correlates of successful associative memory encoding and retrieval in patients (10 females and 9 males) undergoing intracranial EEG monitoring. We identified a dissociation between 2–5 Hz and 5–9 Hz theta oscillations, by which power increases in 2–5 Hz oscillations were uniquely linked with successful associative memory in both the anterior and posterior hippocampus. These oscillations exhibited a significant phase reset that also predicted successful associative encoding and distinguished recollected from nonrecollected items at retrieval, as well as contributing to relatively greater reinstatement of encoding-related patterns for recollected versus nonrecollected items. Our results provide direct electrophysiological evidence that 2–5 Hz hippocampal theta oscillations preferentially support the formation of associative memories, although we also observed memory-related effects in the 5–9 Hz frequency range using measures such as phase reset and reinstatement of oscillatory activity.SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT Models of episodic memory encoding predict that theta oscillations support the formation of interitem associations. We used an associative recognition task designed to elicit strong hippocampal activation to test this prediction in human neurosurgical patients implanted with intracranial electrodes. The findings suggest that 2–5 Hz theta oscillatory power and phase reset in the hippocampus are selectively associated with associative memory judgments. Furthermore, reinstatement of oscillatory patterns in the hippocampus was stronger for successful recollection. Collectively, the findings support a role for hippocampal theta oscillations in human associative memory.  相似文献

Hemorrhage is recognized as a new independent predictor of adverse outcomes following acute myocardial infarction. However, the mechanisms of its effects are less understood. The aim of our study was to probe the downstream impact of hemorrhage towards chronic remodeling, including inflammation, vasodilator function and matrix alterations in an experimental model of hemorrhage. Myocardial hemorrhage was induced in the porcine heart by intracoronary injection of collagenase. Animals (N = 18) were subjected to coronary occlusion followed by reperfusion in three groups (six/group): 8 min ischemia with hemorrhage (+HEM), 45 min infarction with no hemorrhage (I ? HEM) and 45 min infarction with hemorrhage (I + HEM). MRI was performed up to 4 weeks after intervention. Cardiac function, edema (T2, T1), hemorrhage (T2*), vasodilator function (T2 BOLD), infarction and microvascular obstruction (MVO) and partition coefficient (pre‐ and post‐contrast T1) were computed. Hemorrhage was induced only in the +HEM and I + HEM groups on Day 1 (low T2* values). Infarct size was the greatest in the I + HEM group, while the +HEM group showed no observable infarct. MVO was seen only in the I + HEM group, with a 40% occurrence rate. Function was compromised and ventricular volume was enlarged only in the hemorrhage groups and not in the ischemia‐alone group. In the infarct zone, edema and matrix expansion were the greatest in the I + HEM group. In the remote myocardium, T2 elevation and matrix expansion associated with a transient vasodilator dysfunction were observed in the hemorrhage groups but not in the ischemia‐alone group. Our study demonstrates that the introduction of myocardial hemorrhage at reperfusion results in greater myocardial damage, upregulated inflammation, chronic adverse remodeling and remote myocardial alterations beyond the effects of the initial ischemic insult. A systematic understanding of the consequences of hemorrhage will potentially aid in the identification of novel therapeutics for high‐risk patients progressing towards heart failure.  相似文献

The recurrence of ventral hernias continues to be a problem faced by surgeons, in spite of efforts toward implementing novel repair techniques and utilizing different materials to promote healing. Cadaveric acellular dermal matrices (Alloderm) have shown some promise in numerous surgical subspecialties, but these meshes still suffer from subsequent failure and necessitation of re‐intervention. Here, it is demonstrated that the addition of platelet rich plasma to Alloderm meshes temporally modulates both the innate and cytotoxic inflammatory responses to the implanted material. This results in decreased inflammatory cytokine production at early time points, decreased matrix metalloproteinase expression, and decreased CD8+ T cell infiltration. Collectively, these immune effects result in a healing phenotype that is free from mesh thinning and characterized by increased material stiffness.  相似文献
